A Dream City

On September, 8th 2009, I instructed my ECD3KD students to read two enlightening articles about designing buildings using reused materials. It is so amazing to see such incredible designs only use dumped materials in the name of love for the environment. The designers must have been very creative in a way that they could turn garbage into amazing creations. This is what I really hope my students will be: amazing inventors/designers. So, for this, I assigned them a task that is to use their creativity in designing a dream city that is MOSTLY environmental friendly. They were allowed to refer to the details discussed in the two texts. However, they must retain the originality aspect in their design. Five teams competed. This time, three teams were disqualified as they failed to follow my instruction that the design should be elaborated in an essay. So, I have decided to declare the edited version of this essay as the winner of this challenge:
A mostly environmental friendly city should use energy resources that are environmentally friendly like the solar, wind and wave energy, just to name a few. To supply fresh air to its population, more and more trees should be planted along the road and in all public places. Besides that, public transit like the monorail and double-decker buses should be used as the main transport system. This can reduce the number of vehicles as well as the pollutants. Waste is managed effectively through reusing and recycling. To reduce heat, each building is constructed in a distance.
designed by:
Nik Abdul Aziz
Mohd Anuar
Wan Muhammad Hafizuddin
Muhammad Hafiz Ibrahim
Mohd Shafiq
I believe that though this may not be the best design, given the time, these future engineers may mature into amazing inventors.

A lovely poem by my ECD3KD students

When we did our Reading Lesson in BEL311 class last Tuesday, I assigned my students to write a poem using the words used in two reading texts that we learned that day. My purpose was to let them learn how to refine their language through manipulation of words. So, all the students were divided into 4 groups. Then, I promised them that only those who produced the most beautiful poem will be declared as the winner and win the participation mark for that session. Thinking that the task of finding the winner will be easy since the engineering students that I know are pretty much straightforward kind of human beings, I fell short of my expectation. Little that I know they are mostly talented in this field of producing a poem with 'flowery language'. It took me 2 days to decide who is the winner. And this is the result:
THE LOVE SEASON
Love is autumn
When the empty dark sky
Moves as fast as the storm in a windy day
Terrifying yet eternal
Love is winter
When the frightening nightmares
Recurs from midnight till dawn
Leaving the innocent smothered
Breathless, empty and dying
For the hunger and thirst
of love that turns snowy
the loveless becomes the dead crow
Love is spring
When the colourful flowers and greeneries
decorates the entire universe
all the unendurable and tedious feelings
all the painful stings
blown away by the tempestuous cloudy yet shiny day
Love is summer
When the piercing hot sun in the afternoon
melts the loveless
clears the heavy clouds
brightens the arena as the light in a dark space
Exciting yet mortal
winners:
Basyah
Hafiz
M. Hilmi
Izzat
Shafiq
Izan
Akmalina
Afzan
Mazmira
Hanie
Atiqa
Aziz
Hamdan
Akmal
Asri
Anuar
Hairul
Mior
Amirul
Hilmi
Hafiz
Muiz
Of course, this is a fully edited version. not one poem is complete without the other. so, since all of them described the same theme in their poem, I guess the combination of all the 4 poems will win the challenge. so, at the end of the day, everybody is the winner.
