THE TWILIGHT SAGA

My first ever contact with the existence of 'Twilight' was when I watched the first movie adapted from the first novel. At first, I was a bit skeptical when it comes to this genre of movie as I am not really a fan of something superstitious and hard-to-believe magic. However, the urge to be acquainted with this movie turned stronger each day. I must say that my growing curiosity came from watching frequent Hollywood news on T.V. It seems that the movie was a huge success there and I told myself that I should give it a try. So, I watched the movie. For me, it was ok. From the scale of 1 to 5, I would pick 3.5. Apart from the good-looking hero and heroin, I felt that a lot of the scenes were too good to be true. That's it. I gave it a try. So far, it's not on my list of best movies.

However, things started to change during my most recent outing in Kuantan. A girl working in one of the CD outlets in Berjaya Megamall revealed an interesting fact about this 'Twilight' Saga. It all happened as I was browsing through some DVDs (no intention of buying though) and I stopped to have a look at the 'New Moon' poster. She mentioned to me that she had read all the four novels - the Twilight Saga (I was shocked to find that there are more of Twilight) and she said that it is one of the best stories that she has ever known. She strongly recommended that I read the novels, especially the fourth one. Amazingly, I became interested in this and decided to read the novels instead of watching the movie. So, I tried searching for e-Books on the Net and fortunately I found the complete collection. I read the first one though I think I knew the plot of the story as I had watched the movie earlier. However, my assumption was clearly wrong. The novel was way better than the movie. I found myself drawn to the character of Edward (of course, I imagined him most good-looking and charming). What makes it irresistible is the love (here comes the romantic idea again) with a VAMPIRE - who happens to be a perfect description of how a man should be; good-looking, strong, protective, loving and caring etc. This suits the girl's character as being weak, etc that proves to be a perfect love match. Believe it or not, I finished the novel in less than 10 hours (that time includes my household chores).

I skipped 'New Moon' and I read 'Eclipse' and 'Breaking Dawn'. Overall, I still prefer the first novel 'Twilight'. For a while, I felt like I'm more in the world of vampires than the real one that I'm living now. I must say that the writer, Stephanie Meyer is so brilliant in putting the X-factor in her novels. The delicious character of Edward blended with some romantic scenes with his girl, Bella, makes it a perfect reading. What I admire most apart from the character is that they pursue true love (rather than lust). Apart from that, I'm still sane to say that as much as I like Edward, a perfect man like him only exists in novels and movies.

P.S. I Love You

Being a Pisces, I must say that I am a bit romantic at heart. My fav genre of novels and movies is always romantic comedies. Recently, I watched P.S. I Love You (the movie) on Astro. Like what some people might say, I was at that time, not interested at all to watch very very sad movie. I just want to release my stress after all day of working. However, since I did not have any other options, I decided to give a chance to this movie. The first scene of the movie really caught my interests. I was so immersed in the movie as I began to sob unconsciously and uncontrollably. I am actually not a kind of person who will easily get carried away by emotions. When all my friends burst into tears while watching Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I sat alone frozen in my seat without any emotions. Overall, the movie was really great.

The next day, I decided to read the novel itself to make me understand the whole story even more. The story is about a young married couple, Holly and Gerry, who have a joke between them: If anything ever happened to him, he’d have to write her a list or else she’d never be able to cope without him. “The List” grew to encompass advice for any eventuality, a joke all their friends shared. When Gerry’s severe headache is diagnosed as brain cancer and Holly tragically loses him in a few short months, she is devastated and unmoored. She hasn’t just lost her husband, she’s lost her very identity. And then it arrives: a package marked “The List.” Gerry has kept his promise, and inside this package are ten envelopes to be opened over a period of ten months. Each letter offers specific instructions to guide Holly through grief, and ultimately grant her permission to return to life. Of course each letter ends with PS, I Love You.

The story begins in a very depressing description of life after Gerry's death - Gerry was gone and he would never be back. That was the reality. She would never again run her fingers through his soft hair, never share a secret joke across the table at a dinner party, never cry to him when she got home from a hard day at work and just needed a hug; she would never share a bed with him again, never be woken up by his fits of sneezes each morning, never laugh with him so much her stomach would ache, never fight with him about whose turn it was to get up and turn the bedroom light off. All that was left was a bundle of memories and an image of his face that became more and more vague each day.

The first letter says this:
My darling Holly,
I don’t know where you are or when exactly you are reading this. I just hope that my letter has found you safe and healthy. You whispered to me not long ago that you couldn’t go on alone. You can, Holly.
You are strong and brave and you can get through this. We shared some beautiful times together and you made my life . . . you made my life. I have no regrets. But I am just a chapter in your life, there will be many more. Remember our wonderful memories, but please don’t be afraid to make some more.
Thank you for doing me the honor of being my wife. For everything, I am eternally grateful.
Whenever you need me, know that I am with you.

Love Forever,
Your husband and best friend,
Gerry

PS, I promised a list, so here it is. The following envelopes must be opened exactly when labeled and must be obeyed. And remember, I’m looking out for you, so I will know . . .

The letter that is the most touching:
PS, I love you, Holly, and I know you love me. You don’t need my belongings to remember me by, you don’t need to keep them as proof that I existed or still exist in your mind. You don’t need to wear my sweater to feel me around you; I’m already there . . . always wrapping my arms around you.

And the description of her feelings was so clear that it was as if I myself can experience the sadness that she felt:

Days went by when she felt so happy and content and confident that her life would be OK, and then as quickly as the feeling came it would disappear again, and she would feel her sadness setting in once more. She tried to find a routine she could happily fall into so that she felt like she belonged in her body and her body belonged in this life, instead of wandering around like a zombie watching everybody else live theirs while she waited around for hers to end. Unfortunately the routine hadn’t turned out exactly as she hoped it would. She found herself immobile for hours in the sitting room, reliving every single memory that she and Gerry had shared. Sadly, she spent most of that time thinking about every argument they had had, wishing she could take them back, wishing she could take back every horrible word she had ever said to him. She prayed that Gerry had known her words had only been spoken out of anger and that they had not reflected her true feelings. She tortured herself for the times she had acted selfishly, going out with her friends for the night when she was mad at him instead of staying home with him. She chastised herself for walking away from him when she should have hugged him, when she held grudges for days instead of forgiving him, when she went straight to sleep some nights instead of making love to him. She wanted to take back every moment she knew he had been so angry with her and hated her. She wished all her memories could be of the good times, but the bad times kept coming back to haunt her. They had all been such a waste of time. And nobody had told them that they were short on time.

When it's time for happy moments, do the best to relive them:

Now and again she rang his mobile phone just to hear his voice on his answering machine, she had even been paying the mobile company every month just to keep his account open. His smell had faded from the house; his clothes long gone under his own orders. He was fading from her mind, and she clung to every little bit of him that she could. She deliberately thought about him every night right before she went to sleep just so that she would dream about him. She even bought his favorite aftershave and splashed it around the house so she wouldn’t feel so alone. Sometimes she would be out and a familiar smell or song would transport her back to another time and place. A happier time.

When the final letter came, I couldn't help myself crying:

Don’t be afraid to fall in love again. Open your heart and follow where it leads you . . . and remember, shoot for the moon . . .

PS, I will always love you . . .

And finally, Holly's speech during Denise's wedding was once again emotionally challenging:

“Finding someone you love and who loves you back is a wonderful, wonderful feeling. But finding a true soul mate is an even better feeling. A soul mate is someone who understands you like no other, loves you like no other, will be there for you forever, no matter what. They say that nothing lasts forever, but I am a firm believer in the fact that for some, love lives on even after we’re gone. I know a thing or two about having someone like that…,”

Now, I'm going to explain why I am so fascinated by the story. Look at the dramatic description of Holly's feelings. Focus on the wordings as well. It is as if we can share her sadness. A good writer is successfull in bringing the true emotional effect in her readers.

After I read the novel, I learned some valuable lessons in life; always appreciate people around you who love you and never expect anything except for your love in return. This not only covers your spouse in particular, but also your whole family especially the parents. Value their presence and spend more time with them. When it's time for them to go, at least you won't have any regret. We will always be busy with our work day by day but don't let it serve as a barrier that prevents us from loving them. A simple 'I love you' saying is enough to be uttered daily. Trust me, our mother or spouse will be smiling after hearing that.

As Holly said, to love and to be loved are blessings of life. There's no such thing as perfection in love. Nobody is perfect. True love is someone who makes us special and always be there for us. And the love will remain forever. Just like Gerry and Holly.

my last journey with ASD1TA on October 21, 2009

It has been a while since I last wrote here. I just realised that it has been 2 months. It is my intention to keep in-touch with all my students - the previous and the current ones. I have been working non-stop though all the classes had ended. The markings, meetings etc have taken most of my time. Until today.

With some little time left (I've to attend exam meeting in about 20 minutes from now), I intend to write about my last class with my ASD1TA students last October. It was one of the most memorable days of my life. Unlike my other classes, my classes with these students took only 4 hours per week. So, I did not get the chance to really sit with them and discuss their academic problems. From the first day I set my feet in this class, I got the feeling that these students really need a lot of monitoring to improve their performance. I admit that I was a bit strict with them. Making it compulsory for them to sign up for blogs etc. Sometimes I did get angry with them in class. Actually, I really cared for them and it's for their own good. It is my HOPE to see them be somebody. I really want them to benefit the life that God has granted on them. Do something to make this world a better place to live than the day before.

So, on the last day of class, after I discussed the previous final exam paper with them, I started to give my final speech. Suddenly, the tears keep on running down my cheek. I did NOT intend to cry or show them my emotions. I HAVE NEVER EVER CRIED BEFORE in my other final classes. May be, I feel like I have given all my effort to help them and I cannot do anything anymore to help. Realising that it's going to be my last day and time to meet them before the final exam made me even more distressed.

If any of the readers here happen to be ex-ASD1TA, I hope that no matter where you are, remember my last message and please do update your blog. I'll check the blogs from time to time - a4gurlz, funbutnotfair, banterbelayu, summer09, relaxsokmo, pakatcuit and tudungungu. I wish you all the blessings in life.

A Dream City

On September, 8th 2009, I instructed my ECD3KD students to read two enlightening articles about designing buildings using reused materials. It is so amazing to see such incredible designs only use dumped materials in the name of love for the environment. The designers must have been very creative in a way that they could turn garbage into amazing creations. This is what I really hope my students will be: amazing inventors/designers. So, for this, I assigned them a task that is to use their creativity in designing a dream city that is MOSTLY environmental friendly. They were allowed to refer to the details discussed in the two texts. However, they must retain the originality aspect in their design. Five teams competed. This time, three teams were disqualified as they failed to follow my instruction that the design should be elaborated in an essay. So, I have decided to declare the edited version of this essay as the winner of this challenge:

A mostly environmental friendly city should use energy resources that are environmentally friendly like the solar, wind and wave energy, just to name a few. To supply fresh air to its population, more and more trees should be planted along the road and in all public places. Besides that, public transit like the monorail and double-decker buses should be used as the main transport system. This can reduce the number of vehicles as well as the pollutants. Waste is managed effectively through reusing and recycling. To reduce heat, each building is constructed in a distance.

designed by:
Nik Abdul Aziz
Mohd Anuar
Wan Muhammad Hafizuddin
Muhammad Hafiz Ibrahim
Mohd Shafiq

I believe that though this may not be the best design, given the time, these future engineers may mature into amazing inventors.

A lovely poem by my ECD3KD students

When we did our Reading Lesson in BEL311 class last Tuesday, I assigned my students to write a poem using the words used in two reading texts that we learned that day. My purpose was to let them learn how to refine their language through manipulation of words. So, all the students were divided into 4 groups. Then, I promised them that only those who produced the most beautiful poem will be declared as the winner and win the participation mark for that session. Thinking that the task of finding the winner will be easy since the engineering students that I know are pretty much straightforward kind of human beings, I fell short of my expectation. Little that I know they are mostly talented in this field of producing a poem with 'flowery language'. It took me 2 days to decide who is the winner. And this is the result:

THE LOVE SEASON

Love is autumn
When the empty dark sky
Moves as fast as the storm in a windy day
Terrifying yet eternal

Love is winter
When the frightening nightmares
Recurs from midnight till dawn
Leaving the innocent smothered
Breathless, empty and dying
For the hunger and thirst
of love that turns snowy
the loveless becomes the dead crow

Love is spring
When the colourful flowers and greeneries
decorates the entire universe
all the unendurable and tedious feelings
all the painful stings
blown away by the tempestuous cloudy yet shiny day

Love is summer
When the piercing hot sun in the afternoon
melts the loveless
clears the heavy clouds
brightens the arena as the light in a dark space
Exciting yet mortal

winners:
Basyah
Hafiz
M. Hilmi
Izzat
Shafiq
Izan
Akmalina
Afzan
Mazmira
Hanie
Atiqa
Aziz
Hamdan
Akmal
Asri
Anuar
Hairul
Mior
Amirul
Hilmi
Hafiz
Muiz

Of course, this is a fully edited version. not one poem is complete without the other. so, since all of them described the same theme in their poem, I guess the combination of all the 4 poems will win the challenge. so, at the end of the day, everybody is the winner.

Start with 'INTERESTS'

The first step towards mastering the language is by being interested in it. Start with the area that might spark the interests. A simple example would be, if you love entertainment like watching movies and listening to the songs, focus on things that use the language. In other words, if English is the language that you want to improve, watch more of English movies and listen more to English songs. it is as simple as that.

As I have mentioned in my recent post, the more you use or are exposed to the language, the more proficient you are. So, start focusing on more English materials if you are really serious to improve yourself. Look at the aspects of pronunciation, wordings and many others. So in my future posts, I may discuss some great novels or movies that you might want to read or watch later.

Make the most of English!!!

Today I want to talk about the best way to learn any language. In this context, I'd like to take English as an example. In Malaysia, we learn English for years and years. In fact, the moment we join the schooling system, we learn to pronounce some English words may be through nursery rhymes etc. We learn English for at least 11 years. Unlike any other subjects, English revolves around the same topics like Grammar and Reading throughout the 11 years. So, to say that mastering English is difficult should not be an excuse. The real problem that lies underneath is that most learners lack exposure to the language which causes incompetencies. There's a saying that "Practice makes perfect", so learners need to put their knowledge of the language into practice, like through speaking and writing. The more they speak and write, the better their language is. However, before they are able to produce speeches and writings, they need to read and listen to the materials in that particular language.

Take me, for example. Both my parents did not get the opportunity to receive proper education. However, I am blessed to have such a wonderful mother who truly believes in education, though she herself did not even finish her high school to be married to my father. Since I was a child, she'd buy me a lot of reading materials, among them comics and bedtime storybooks. From as early as 3 years old, I was homeschooled, learning a lot of things from reading to calculating. By 6 years old, I finished my Qur'anic lessons, able to read novels and had already mastered basic Maths. Since I am the youngest in the family, I was always lonely as I did not have anyone to talk to. All my siblings had already left home for boarding schools. So, my salvation was books. I realised that reading had become my main hobby. When I was 12, I read my first English novels (as I couldn't find any more unread Malay novels). The English novels were my sisters' - Barbara Cartland, Mills & Boon and a few others. This explains why my English has always been As throughout my entire years at schools. When I grew older, I became fascinated at reading more and more English novels like Sydney Sheldon, Judith McNaught and many more. Although my parents do not know how to utter a single word in English, I am so fortunate that they have raised me well.

So, the bottom line here is that learners have to make use of any language that they are learning in order to master it. Read English books, listen to English songs and news. Don't be shy to speak English with other people. Start writing diary entries in English. These work all the time.

how this extremely tiny entity and unseen to the naked eye is one of the world's deadliest virus

scary isn't it? and ironic enough. the air allows us to live and the very same air causes death. we share the same air, regardless of our faith, status and race. everyone and anyone can be infected anytime. here's something that I found on the Net written by Chan Lee Peng http://healthmad.com/conditions-and-diseases/three-scary-killer-flu-pandemics-that-raged-fiercely-over-the-world/

Swine flu (also called swine influenza, influenza A (H1N1), flu ) is a respiratory disease among the pig populations caused by A influenza virus, in which its outbreak normally occurs in the colder weather months (late fall and winter). In 1930 in the United States, an influenza type A H1N1 virus has been known to circulate among pigs. The current swine flu H3N2 viruses are closely associated with human H3N2 viruses.
Humans catch swine flu when they’ve a direct contact/ direct exposure to the infected pigs or those who’re close proximity to infected pigs such as in slaughterhouses, swine production barns, and livestock exhibits at fairs. More specifically, this virus can be directly transmitted from pigs to humans as “zoonotic” disease agents, and vice versa, from humans to pigs. Human-to-human transmission of swine flu occurs via sneezing or coughing of people infected with this virus; and people may also get infected by simply touching their mouth or nose or contacting with anything with flu viruses on it.
The well known outbreak of swine flu was first reported among soldiers in Fort Dix, New Jersey in 1976. This virus caused at least 4 soldiers with x-ray evidence of pneumonia and one death. In 1988 in Wisconsin, the apparent swine flu infection in pigs was reported to cause multiple human infections. In the same year of September, one 32-year-old pregnant woman was diagnosed to be infected with a swine H1N1 flu virus, and she died 8 days later after hospitalization for pneumonia. She was said to visit a county fair swine exhibition where there was widespread influenza-like illness among the swine. CDC stated that one human swine influenza virus infection is reported every one to two years in the United States, and 12 cases of human infection with swine influenza have been reported from December 2005 through February 2009.

Swine Flu Pandemic

It's very scary that such unseen virus has killed many people. This virus has been responsible in an increasing number of death toll worldwide. In Malaysia alone, up until yesterday 4 have been dead due to the complication from this virus. 4 UiTM campuses have been closed due to the spreading of this extremely tiny virus. As a result of this worrying stats, all UiTM campuses were given mid-sem break 8 weeks earlier. But, there seems to be a problem here. Will sending students home ensure that the virus is not widely spread? Will returning to campus by end of this week ensure that the students are virus-free? Obviously, we can't be so sure of that. Let's just pray that God will protect us all. Here I attach the message from Dr Zainul about the safety measures that all of us should focus on:

INFLUENZA A (H1N1)
A. Adakah ANDA mempunyai tanda-tanda jangkitan Influenza A ?
DEMAM PANAS ( >38*C), BATUK, SAKIT TEKAK, SAKIT BADAN.
Jika YA, sila dapatkan rawatan dan asingkan pelajar dari kelas/kuliah.
(Practice self isolation, social distancing and personal hygiene)
B. Bagaimana ANDA boleh dijangkiti Influenza A ?
i. Melalui titisan cecair yang keluar ketika batuk atau bersin dari seorang pesakit
ii. Menyentuh permukaan yang dicemari kuman H1N1 serta menyentuh muka/hidung
C. Apa yang patut ANDA lakukan sekiranya dijangkiti Influenza A ?
1. Ambil rawatan segera dan patuhi jadual makan ubat
2. Minum air sebanyak mungkin supaya tidak dehidrasi serta makan makanan yang berkhasiat
3. Rehat secukupnya di rumah/ bilik
4. Segera dapatkan rawatan kecemasan sekiranya berlaku :
• SESAK NAFAS, BATUK BERDARAH, SAKIT DADA YANG BERTERUSAN
• CIRIT-BIRIT ATAU MUNTAH BERTERUSAN
• DEMAM PANAS MELEBIHI 3 HARI
• PERUBAHAN TINGKAHLAKU YANG ABNORMAL ATAU SAWAN
• LEMAH DAN TIDAK STABIL KETIKA BERDIRI

5. Amalkan langkah pencegahan jangkitan Influenza A dengan :
v. Sekiranya anda perlu keluar, pastikan anda memakai penutup muka.
vi. Jarakkan diri anda dari orang ramai sekurang-kurangnya 1 meter

Learning strategies

Dear students,

I find this article very interesting and may be helpful to you.

Studying strategies, also called learner strategies, are ways of learning. Good learners use these strategies to make their learning more efficient.
There are two main types of learning strategies, the first are strategies for planning how to learn, and secondly strategies for learning.
Strategies for Planning How to Learn
Advance Organisation
Doing a preview of what you are going to learn. For example, if you want to improve your pronunciation, you can read the introduction to different pronunciation books, and find out that you need to study the sounds of consonants, vowels, intonation, stress and linking.
Directing Attention
This means paying attention to studying something, and not doing other things like surfing the Internet.
Selective Attention
This means studying things that you can remember more easily, for example because they are useful for your university course or for your job. If you need to do a presentation for your course you can study presentations, if you need to write a report at work, you can learn how to write a report.
Self-management
This is understanding the conditions that help you learn, and organising them. For example, if you like music, learning in a place with music. You will also need materials like books and maybe a computer.
Advance Preparation
Planning and learning English that you will need for something, for example learning the correct pronunciation of important words in a presentation.
Self-monitoring
Correcting yourself if you make a mistake when you are using English. This is good for accuracy, but not for fluency.
Delayed Production
When you first start to learn a new language you may decide not to try speaking until you have learned some vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. You may just want to try listening first, before speaking.
Self-evaluation (Self-assessment or testing)
Deciding if you have finished learning a topic because your English is good enough to do the things you need.
Self-reinforcement
This means giving yourself a present when you have successfully learned something. For example, chocolate or 10 minutes playing computer games.
Working Alone or with Other People
With other people you can compare ideas, criticise ideas, get more ideas, and therefore think about things in more detail than you can alone.

Thinking Strategies
- Grouping: Putting things in groups and in order helps you to build a framework for learning. Grouping also reflects the way your brain organises information. For example, you can group vocabulary words together according to categories like furniture, animals, office equipment, etc. Using mind-maps is one type of grouping.
Imagery: This means making pictures in your mind to help you remember things. For example a 'hamburger paragraph'.
